Just had a first real taste what a boxing fight is like…

The club that is training all of us for our fight put on a special ‘sparring’ evening. Everyone gets to do 3 rounds in the ring watched and cheered on by all the other fighters – probably the closet we will get to the experience the ‘real thing’ before next Sunday…

Supposedly, it was sparring, as in not actually punching full force, just contact. Whilst watching some of the other fights before me, I was seriously thinking of walking out the gym as could see some people were really going hell for leather in the ring. As I was already nursing some sore ribs was concerned that I could get really injured and have to pull out the main fight. Not good as 20 mates have paid over a grand between them to watch me fight in aid of Cancer Research.

Unfortunately, my opponent, sorry, training partner was one of those that didn’t quite get the difference between sparring and trying to knock someone out. Didn’t help that he was heavier, taller, fitter, 20 years younger than me and could actually box, well in comparison to me anyway.

6 minutes later I have a bloody nose, bloody gum shield, seriously bruised ribs and would have ended up on the canvas were it not for some rather well positioned ropes – think i took a standing count too, but not 100% sure, all a bit blurry. To be honest feeling very battered and sorry for myself, took me a good half an hour to stop shaking afterwards. Funnily enough I don’t think boxing is really my thing…

I suppose on the plus side nothing is broken and hopefully the guy that matches up the fighters for the big fight now realises how crap I really I am.

What could possibly go wrong…
